Once this membrane is damaged, what happens is that the copper ions move into the cell and destroy the DNA and RNA inside which effectively stops both bacteria and viruses from further multiplying. 

Research from the University of Southampton also reiterates that copper is very effective in helping to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses such as the coronavirus.

A study that was recently released on March 17, 2020 by the National Institutes of Health, CDC, UCLA and Princeton University scientists in ‘The New England Journal of Medicine’ has heartening news. When tested, it was found that the coronavirus could survive for even two to three days on surfaces made of plastic or stainless steel and up to 24 hours on cardboard, this lasted merely up to four hours on copper. This adds more credence to the anti-viral nature of copper.
